LG makes well-designed refrigerators that generally perform well — but there's one important issue every LG fridge owner should know about before something goes wrong. If your LG refrigerator was made between 2012 and 2020 and uses a linear compressor, read the next section first. It could save you hundreds of dollars.
The LG Linear Compressor Issue — What You Need to Know
LG's inverter linear compressor technology was marketed as a major innovation — quieter, more efficient, and longer-lasting than traditional compressors. For many owners, it has been. For others, it has failed prematurely — sometimes as early as 4–5 years into the appliance's life.
Which LG Fridges Are Affected
The linear compressor issue primarily affected LG French door and bottom-freezer models manufactured approximately 2012–2020. Affected models typically have model numbers beginning with LRMVS, LRFVS, LRMVS, LFXS, LFCS, and similar designations. Top-freezer LG models use conventional compressors and were not part of this issue.
Symptoms of Linear Compressor Failure
- Both fridge and freezer compartments warm up completely
- No humming sound from the compressor (it's not running)
- Clicking sounds near the compressor area at the back bottom of the fridge — the start relay is attempting to start a failed compressor
- Sometimes preceded by the fridge running constantly and not maintaining temperature before total failure
Er FF — Freezer Fan Motor Error
The Er FF error code on LG refrigerators points to the freezer evaporator fan motor. This fan is responsible for circulating cold air from the evaporator coils throughout both the freezer and fresh food compartments. When it fails, you typically notice the fridge section warming up while the freezer stays relatively cold.
Causes
- Fan motor failure: The motor bearing wears out — usually accompanied by a squealing noise before complete failure
- Ice buildup blocking the fan: If the defrost system has failed, ice accumulates around the fan blade and prevents it from turning — clearing the ice resolves the code temporarily but the defrost system still needs repair
- Wiring harness damage: Less common but possible if the fridge has been moved or serviced previously
When to Call a Technician
Evaporator fan motor replacement on LG refrigerators requires accessing the freezer interior panels — typically 1.5–2 hours of labour. The part itself is $40–$80; total repair cost is usually $180–$280.
Er CF — Condenser Fan Motor Error
Er CF points to the condenser fan motor at the back of the refrigerator. The condenser fan keeps the compressor and condenser coils cool. When it fails, the compressor overheats and the entire unit gradually stops cooling — both compartments become warm.
DIY Check
Pull the fridge away from the wall and access the back panel. The condenser fan is a small fan near the compressor. Check that it spins freely and isn't blocked by debris or a build-up of lint and dust. Clean around the fan thoroughly. If the fan motor hums but doesn't spin, the bearing has seized and the motor needs replacement.
LG Refrigerator Error Codes — Overview
| Error Code | Meaning | Common Cause | DIY or Tech? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Er FF | Freezer fan motor error | Motor failure or ice blockage | Technician |
| Er CF | Condenser fan motor error | Motor bearing failure or debris | DIY clean first, then tech |
| Er IF | Ice maker fan error | Ice maker compartment fan failure | Technician |
| Er dH | Defrost heater error | Failed defrost heater or sensor | Technician |
| Er FS | Freezer sensor error | Failed freezer temperature sensor | Technician |
| Er rS | Refrigerator sensor error | Failed fridge compartment sensor | Technician |
LG Ice Maker Problems
LG French door refrigerators — particularly those with in-door or upper-compartment ice makers — are prone to ice maker issues. This is different from the linear compressor problem but equally common in our service experience.
Common LG Ice Maker Failures
- Ice maker frozen solid: Moisture enters the ice maker compartment and freezes the assembly into one solid block — the entire ice maker needs manual defrosting and the root cause (usually a seal issue) needs fixing
- Tray heater failure: The small heater that releases cubes from the mold stops working — cubes stick in the tray and production stops
- Water inlet valve failure: Water doesn't flow into the ice maker — no new ice is produced even though the assembly cycles
- Ice maker arm or sensor failure: The mechanism that detects ice bin fullness fails — the ice maker thinks the bin is full and stops producing
DIY Check
Open the freezer and inspect the ice maker compartment. If ice is visible in a solid mass rather than individual cubes, it's frozen over. You can manually defrost with a hair dryer on low heat. If no ice is present and the ice maker is cycling (you can hear it) but no water drops in, the water supply line or inlet valve is the issue.
LG Refrigerator Not Cooling
When an LG fridge stops cooling, the diagnostic path depends on what exactly is happening:
- Both compartments warm, compressor not running: Compressor failure or start relay — check warranty first on linear compressor models
- Fridge warm, freezer cold: Evaporator fan (Er FF) or defrost system failure
- Both warm, compressor running: Condenser fan (Er CF), dirty condenser coils, refrigerant leak, or defrost system completely blocked
- Cooling inconsistent: Control board or temperature sensor failure
LG warranty check: Before spending money on any LG refrigerator repair, locate your model number (on the interior left wall or door jamb sticker) and call LG Canada at 1-888-542-2623 to confirm warranty status. LG's 10-year linear compressor warranty and 1-year parts/labour warranty cover many common repairs at no cost.
French Door Seal Problems
LG French door models use magnetic door gaskets on both doors. Gasket failure is common after 7–10 years — the magnetic strip loses pull, or the gasket material cracks and hardens. Signs of a failing seal include condensation around the doors, frost buildup inside the fridge, and the compressor running more than usual.
Test and Fix
The paper test: close a sheet of paper in the door and pull — if it slides out with no resistance, the gasket is failing. Cleaning the gasket with warm soapy water and conditioning it with petroleum jelly can temporarily restore flexibility. For cracked or fully warped gaskets, replacement is the permanent fix.
