LG Dryer Problems — Quick Reference

  • D80/D90/D95: Vent blockage warning — clean duct immediately (fire risk)
  • CL: Child Lock active — not an error, hold button to clear
  • tE: Thermistor (temperature sensor) failure
  • Not heating: Blown thermal fuse, heating element, or gas igniter
  • Drum not turning: Broken drive belt
  • Making noise: Worn drum rollers, idler pulley, or foreign object

LG dryers are well-engineered machines with a direct drive motor system that eliminates one common failure point (the belt drive motor) compared to older designs. But they still have their characteristic problems — and the Flow Sense vent warning system is one of their most valuable features, alerting homeowners to a genuine fire hazard before it becomes dangerous. Our certified technicians service LG dryers across the GTA every week — this guide covers what we see most.

D80, D90, D95 — LG Flow Sense Vent Warning Codes

LG's Flow Sense system monitors exhaust airflow through the vent duct. When it detects restriction, it displays D80, D90, or D95 — showing the approximate percentage of blockage. These are not errors to dismiss.

Fire hazard warning: A clogged dryer vent is the leading cause of residential dryer fires in Canada. Transport Canada and the National Fire Protection Association both identify lint buildup in dryer ducts as a primary fire risk. When your LG displays D80 or higher, clean the duct before running another cycle.

What D80/D90/D95 Means

DIY Check and Fix

Step 1: Clean the lint trap completely. Step 2: Disconnect the dryer from the wall duct and run it briefly — if D codes clear, the blockage is in the duct, not the machine. Step 3: Clean the full duct run from the dryer connection to the exterior exhaust. For longer duct runs (over 4 meters) or runs with multiple bends, professional duct cleaning equipment is needed.

When to Call a Technician

If the D codes persist after cleaning the duct, the Flow Sense sensor itself may be failing. Also call a technician if your duct runs through walls or ceilings — cleaning these safely requires professional equipment.

CL — Child Lock (Not an Error)

CL is one of the most common "panicked" calls we receive — homeowners see CL on the display and think their dryer is broken. It's not. CL simply means the Child Lock feature is activated and the control panel is locked.

How to Disable Child Lock

Press and hold the Child Lock button for 3 seconds. On models without a dedicated button, hold the combination of buttons shown in your manual (typically two buttons marked with a lock icon). The CL display will disappear and normal operation resumes immediately.

tE — Thermistor Error

The tE error code appears when the LG dryer's thermistor (temperature sensor) fails or reads outside the expected range. The thermistor tells the control board how hot the drum air is — without accurate readings, the dryer can't regulate heat properly.

Symptoms

When to Call a Technician

Thermistor testing requires a multimeter to measure resistance values. If the thermistor is confirmed faulty, replacement is straightforward — it's a small sensor that clips onto the exhaust duct inside the machine. Parts cost $15–$40; the repair is typically $100–$160 total.

LG Dryer Not Heating

A dryer that tumbles but doesn't heat is a common and diagnosable problem. Here are the components our technicians test in order:

Electric LG Dryers — Causes

Gas LG Dryers — Causes

LG dryer tip: Clean the moisture sensors inside the drum once a month. These are two metal bars near the lint trap opening. Dryer sheet residue builds up on them and causes the dryer to think clothes are dry before they are. Clean with rubbing alcohol and a cotton ball.

Drum Not Turning

When the LG dryer motor runs — you can hear it humming — but the drum doesn't rotate, the drive belt has broken. The belt is a long, thin loop that wraps around the drum and connects to the idler pulley and motor pulley.

DIY Check

Reach into the drum and try to rotate it by hand. If it spins very easily with almost no resistance, the belt is broken. If it's stiff or won't turn, something is mechanically jammed.

When to Call a Technician

Drive belt replacement on LG dryers requires removing the top and front panels to access the drum. It's a complete disassembly job — not typical DIY territory. Parts are inexpensive ($15–$30); total repair cost is typically $120–$200.

LG Dryer Making Noise

Dryer noises are diagnostic clues. Each type of sound points to a specific component:

Frequently Asked Questions

D80 on an LG dryer means the exhaust vent is 80% blocked. Clean the lint trap thoroughly, then inspect the vent duct from the back of the dryer to the exterior wall. A blocked or kinked duct is the most common cause. Do not ignore this warning — restricted airflow is a fire hazard.
D90 means the vent is 90% blocked; D95 means 95% blocked. At D95, the dryer may shut down automatically to prevent overheating. These codes require immediate vent cleaning — the full duct from the dryer to the exterior exhaust point must be cleaned. Professional vent cleaning is recommended at this level.
CL on an LG dryer stands for Child Lock — not an error code. The control panel is locked. To disable it, press and hold the Child Lock button (or the button combination in your manual) for 3 seconds.
tE on an LG dryer is a thermistor error — the temperature sensor has failed or is reading incorrectly. The thermistor monitors drum temperature to regulate heating. When it fails, the dryer may not heat properly or may shut off early. Thermistor replacement is a common, moderately affordable repair.
The most common reasons an LG dryer won't heat are a blown thermal fuse (caused by a clogged vent), a failed heating element (electric dryers), a failed gas igniter or flame sensor (gas dryers), or a faulty thermistor. Check the vent first. If the vent is clear, a technician should test the heating components.
If the LG dryer motor runs but the drum doesn't turn, the drive belt has broken. The belt wraps around the drum and is driven by the motor. Drive belt replacement is a common repair that typically costs $120–$200 including parts and labour on LG dryers.
LG dryer noises point to specific worn components: thumping usually means drum rollers or support bearings are worn; squealing indicates idler pulley bearing wear; rattling suggests a foreign object in the drum or duct. Drum roller and idler pulley replacement are common repairs on LG dryers over 5 years old.
