Whirlpool Fridge Problems — Quick Reference

  • Not cooling: Dirty coils, failed evaporator fan, defrost failure
  • Ice maker not working: Ice arm position, clogged filter, frozen fill tube, failed inlet valve
  • Water pooling inside: Clogged defrost drain tube
  • Frost buildup in freezer: Failed defrost heater, thermostat, or thermal limiter
  • Door seal not sealing: Warped or cracked gasket
  • Water dispenser issues: Clogged filter, failed inlet valve, frozen line

Whirlpool makes some of the most reliable and repair-friendly refrigerators in Canada. Parts are widely available, technicians know these machines inside and out, and the designs are relatively straightforward compared to some premium brands. That said, Whirlpool fridges do develop predictable problems — and knowing what they are helps you get a faster, cheaper repair. Our certified technicians service Whirlpool refrigerators across the GTA regularly — here's what we see most often.

Whirlpool Refrigerator Not Cooling

When a Whirlpool fridge stops cooling, the cause is almost always one of four things — and most of them are fixable without replacing the fridge.

Dirty Condenser Coils

This is the most preventable cooling problem. The condenser coils release heat from the refrigerant — when they're coated in dust and pet hair, they can't release heat efficiently and the fridge gradually gets warmer. Clean the coils once a year. On most Whirlpool models, they're at the back of the unit or behind the kickplate at the bottom front.

Failed Evaporator Fan Motor

The evaporator fan circulates cold air from the freezer into the fridge compartment. When it fails, only the freezer stays cold — the fridge section warms up. Listen for the fan running when you open the freezer door. If it's quiet when it should be running, the motor has likely failed.

Defrost System Failure

Whirlpool refrigerators use an automatic defrost cycle to melt frost off the evaporator coils. If the defrost heater, thermal limiter, or defrost thermostat fails, frost builds up and eventually blocks all airflow. The fridge loses cooling even though the compressor is running fine. This is a common and fully repairable problem.

Compressor Failure

If both the fridge and freezer compartments are warm and you can't hear the compressor running, the compressor may have failed. On Whirlpool refrigerators, compressor replacement is often economically viable — parts cost less than on Samsung or LG equivalents.

Ice Maker Not Working

Whirlpool ice maker failures are among our most common service calls. The good news is that most causes are straightforward to diagnose.

When to Call a Technician

Water Pooling Inside the Refrigerator

Finding water on the bottom of your Whirlpool fridge is unpleasant but usually a simple fix. The defrost drain tube — which carries water from the defrost cycle to the drain pan underneath — has become clogged with ice or debris.

DIY Fix

Locate the drain hole at the back of the freezer compartment (usually at the base of the back wall). Pour a small amount of warm water into it to melt any ice blockage. If the clog is persistent, use a flexible brush or turkey baster with warm water. Avoid using sharp objects that can damage the drain.

Frost Buildup in the Freezer

Moderate frost on freezer walls is normal. Thick sheets of ice covering the back wall, floor, or ceiling of the freezer indicate the automatic defrost cycle has stopped working. On Whirlpool models, this is usually one of three components:

Emergency Defrost

Unplug the fridge for 24–48 hours with doors open and towels on the floor. This manually defrosts the evaporator and temporarily restores cooling. The frost will return within days without a proper repair.

Door Seal Problems

Whirlpool refrigerator door gaskets are durable but do wear out — typically after 8–12 years. A failing seal lets warm, humid air into the fridge, causing condensation, frost buildup, and the compressor running constantly.

DIY Test

The paper test: close a piece of paper in the door at several points around the perimeter. If you can pull the paper out without tearing it, the seal isn't gripping. You should feel noticeable resistance when pulling the paper. If sealing is poor, the gasket needs replacement.

Whirlpool advantage: Door gaskets, water filters, ice maker modules, and heating elements for Whirlpool refrigerators are available at most appliance parts suppliers in Canada and can often be ordered next-day. This keeps repair costs lower and turnaround times faster compared to premium imported brands.

Water Dispenser Not Working

Whirlpool French door and side-by-side models with water dispensers share common failure points with their ice makers — often the same components are involved.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common causes include dirty condenser coils, a failed evaporator fan motor, defrost system failure with ice buildup on evaporator coils, or a failing compressor. Start by vacuuming the condenser coils — this is the most common preventable cause and takes 10 minutes.
Whirlpool ice maker problems are usually caused by a jammed ice maker arm (check it's in the 'down' position), a clogged water filter, a frozen fill tube, or a failed water inlet valve. Replace the water filter first. If the filter is fine, a technician should test the inlet valve and ice maker module.
Water pooling inside a Whirlpool fridge is typically caused by a clogged defrost drain. The drain tube gets blocked with ice or debris. You can often clear it by pouring a small amount of warm water into the drain hole at the back of the freezer compartment.
Excessive frost buildup means the defrost system has failed. The defrost heater, thermal limiter, or defrost thermostat has stopped working. A technician needs to diagnose which component failed and replace it.
Whirlpool door gaskets can warp or crack over time. Test the seal by closing a piece of paper in the door — if you can pull it out without resistance, the gasket needs replacement. Cleaning the gasket with warm water and applying petroleum jelly can temporarily improve a mildly warped seal.
Whirlpool refrigerators typically last 13–17 years — above average for the industry. Whirlpool's relatively simple mechanical designs and excellent parts availability make them one of the most repair-friendly fridge brands in Canada.
Yes — Whirlpool is one of the most repair-worthy brands because parts are inexpensive and widely available. Most common repairs are economical on Whirlpool fridges under 10 years old. Our $89 diagnostic gives you all the information to decide.
