Quick Rankings (Technician Experience)

  • Washers — most reliable: Miele, Speed Queen, LG (HE front-load), Whirlpool
  • Dryers — most reliable: Whirlpool, Maytag, Speed Queen — least parts failures
  • Fridges — most reliable: Whirlpool, GE, Frigidaire (top-freezer); LG (non-linear-compressor models)
  • Dishwashers — most reliable: Bosch, Miele; then LG and KitchenAid
  • Brands we see most often for repairs (by volume): Samsung, LG, Whirlpool — but also the most sold brands in Canada

How to Read Appliance Reliability Data

Reliability rankings from a repair company's perspective need context. The brands we repair most often are also the brands most widely sold in Canada — Samsung, LG, and Whirlpool dominate market share. A brand appearing frequently in our service queue doesn't automatically mean it's unreliable; it may simply mean millions of Canadians own one.

What matters more is the failure rate relative to units sold. A brand with 30% of the market that generates 20% of service calls is more reliable than a brand with 15% market share generating 25% of calls. That's the lens we use here — and it shapes some surprising conclusions.

Washing Machine Reliability by Brand

Washers are the appliance category with the highest volume of service calls per unit sold across Canada. Front-loaders generate more service calls than top-loaders, largely due to door seal wear, drum bearing failures, and pump issues inherent to the front-load design.

Miele

Reliability: Excellent Service call frequency: Very Low

Miele washers are consistently the least-repaired machines in our experience. They are engineered to 20-year lifespans and use heavy-duty components not found in mass-market machines. The tradeoff: Miele is significantly more expensive to buy ($1,500–$3,000+) and parts are costly when repairs are needed. But the frequency of needing those repairs is genuinely low.

Speed Queen

Reliability: Excellent Service call frequency: Very Low

Speed Queen builds commercial-grade machines for residential use. Their top-loaders use mechanical controls (not digital), which eliminates the most common failure point in modern washers — the control board. We rarely see Speed Queens in for repair, and when we do, the fix is typically straightforward. A great choice for high-volume households.

LG

Reliability: Good Service call frequency: Moderate

LG washers — particularly their TurboWash front-loaders — have a good reliability track record relative to market share. The direct drive motor (no belt to replace) is a genuine engineering advantage. We do see LG washers for drain pump failures and occasional control board issues, but less frequently than Samsung. Parts are reasonably available.

Samsung

Reliability: Fair Service call frequency: Above Average

Samsung washers generate above-average service call rates relative to their market share in our experience. Common issues include drain pump failures, control board errors, and door latch failures. That said, Samsung makes excellent machines with strong feature sets — the technology is impressive, but the long-term reliability doesn't quite match LG or Whirlpool. Their error code system is comprehensive, which does help with diagnosis.

Whirlpool / Maytag

Reliability: Good Service call frequency: Moderate (proportional to market share)

Whirlpool and Maytag (the same parent company) produce workhorses. They're not flashy, but they're mechanically sound and parts are the most widely available of any brand in Canada. The repair ecosystem for Whirlpool machines is mature — parts are inexpensive and most certified technicians know them inside and out. A reliable choice for most households.

Dryer Reliability by Brand

Dryers are the most reliable major appliance category overall. They are mechanically simple — essentially a drum, a motor, a heat source, and a timer. The most common dryer failure (thermal fuse) is caused by poor vent maintenance, not brand quality. Here's how brands compare on components that do legitimately fail:

Brand Reliability Most Common Issue We See Parts Cost
Whirlpool / Maytag Excellent Thermal fuse (vent-caused, not brand fault) Low
Speed Queen Excellent Very few failures; mechanical simplicity Low–Medium
LG Good Heating element, control board on older units Medium
Samsung Fair–Good Heating element, moisture sensor errors Medium–High
Bosch Good Control board; ventless heat pump dryers need specialist knowledge High
GE Good Idler pulley, drum belt on older models Low–Medium

Refrigerator Reliability by Brand

Fridges have the longest expected lifespan of any major appliance (12–15 years) but also carry the highest repair costs when something goes wrong — particularly compressor failure. Our technician experience with fridge brands:

Whirlpool / Maytag / Amana

Reliability: Good–Excellent Service call frequency: Low relative to market share

Whirlpool's refrigerator lineup — especially top-freezer and bottom-freezer models — are among the most dependable we service. Simple design, widely available parts, and a long history of proven engineering. French door Whirlpool models are more complex but still hold up well compared to Samsung equivalent models.

LG

Reliability: Good (with one major exception) Service call frequency: Moderate

LG refrigerators are generally well-built, but their linear compressor models from 2012–2020 had a well-documented premature failure issue. If you own an LG fridge from that era and it stops cooling, check whether the 10-year compressor warranty still applies before paying for repair. Newer LG fridges have largely moved past this issue. Ice maker problems are also more common on LG French door models than on simpler designs.

Samsung

Reliability: Fair Service call frequency: Above Average

Samsung French door refrigerators are stylish and feature-rich, but they generate more service calls than their market share would predict in our experience. The ice maker — particularly the in-door ice maker on French door models — is the most frequent failure point. Samsung has issued extended warranties and service programs for some models due to ice maker issues. Know this before purchasing.

Bosch / Liebherr

Reliability: Very Good Service call frequency: Low

Premium European brands that genuinely earn their reliability reputation. Bosch and Liebherr refrigerators are well-engineered and generate few service calls relative to units in circulation. The downside is cost — both purchase price and repair cost. Parts are expensive and may require specialist sourcing. Worth it for homeowners who want a 15+ year appliance.

Dishwasher Reliability by Brand

Dishwashers have improved dramatically in reliability over the past decade. The most common failures are pump issues, spray arm blockages, and door latch failures — none of which are catastrophic. Here's where brands stand:

Brand Reliability Most Common Issue Repair Cost Level
Bosch Excellent Control board on older units (rare); very few failures overall High (parts expensive)
Miele Excellent Very infrequent; 20-year design lifespan Very High
KitchenAid Good Control board, pump motor on older models Medium–High
LG Good Drain pump, door latch Medium
Whirlpool Good Spray arm, float switch, door latch Low–Medium
Samsung Fair Drainage errors, control board, water inlet valve Medium
GE Good Door latch, water inlet valve, pump Low–Medium

Budget vs Premium: Is It Worth Paying More?

This is one of the most common questions we get from homeowners. The honest answer depends on what you're buying:

Canadian market note: Parts availability in Canada for some European brands (Miele, Liebherr, Gaggenau) can be slower than for North American brands. If you live outside a major city, this is worth factoring in — a repair that takes 3 days in Toronto might take 2 weeks in a smaller community.

Frequently Asked Questions

Based on service call frequency, Miele and Speed Queen washers require the fewest repairs over their lifespan. Among mainstream brands widely sold in Canada, LG and Whirlpool front-loaders have solid reliability records. Samsung washers are popular but we see more service calls on them relative to LG.
Whirlpool, GE, and Frigidaire refrigerators appear less often in our service queue relative to their market share. LG fridges are generally reliable but their linear compressor (2012–2020 era models) had a known failure issue. Samsung French door models generate above-average ice maker service calls.
For dishwashers, Bosch is consistently more reliable than Samsung based on service call data — we repair far fewer Bosch dishwashers relative to units sold. For washing machines, the comparison is closer, but Bosch still edges out Samsung on long-term reliability. Bosch parts are more expensive, but repairs are less frequent.
Not always — premium price correlates with features, not always reliability. Miele is genuinely more reliable than most budget brands. Sub-Zero and Viking are built for longevity. But a $1,500 Samsung French door fridge is not necessarily more reliable than a $900 Whirlpool top-freezer — and it's more expensive to repair when something goes wrong.
We're hesitant to single out brands as ones to avoid, because reliability varies by appliance type within the same brand. Samsung dishwashers and French door fridges generate higher service call rates relative to their market share. Certain LG linear compressor refrigerators from 2012–2020 had well-documented issues. Research the specific model — not just the brand — before purchasing.
A well-maintained washing machine should last 10–12 years on average. Premium brands like Miele are engineered for 20-year lifespans. Speed Queen washers are known for 25+ year commercial-grade durability. Budget machines from house brands may start having issues at 7–8 years.
