How a Vented Electric Dryer Works
This is the machine most Canadian houses already have. A 240V heating element warms room air, a blower pushes it through the tumbling load, and the hot humid air is exhausted through a duct to an exterior hood. Simple and very fast — but every cycle throws heated air out of your home, and it all depends on that duct staying clear.
How a Heat Pump Dryer Works
A heat pump dryer is a closed system. Instead of exhausting the air, it recirculates it. A small sealed refrigerant loop — the same basic idea as the sealed system in a mini-fridge — has a cold side and a warm side. Humid air leaving the drum passes over the cold side, where moisture condenses out into a removable tank or drain hose. The dried air is reheated on the warm side and returned to the drum.
Because that heat is reused instead of blown outside, the machine draws far less electricity per load, and the cooler drum is easier on elastics and prints. With no exhaust, there is no duct and no hole in the wall.

Energy Use and Running Cost
The efficiency gap comes from physics, not marketing. A vented dryer heats room air once and throws that heat outside. A heat pump keeps recovering the same heat, so it needs a fraction of the energy per load — a difference that shows up on an Ontario hydro bill.
There is a quieter winter saving too: a vented dryer expels heated indoor air, and your furnace has to warm the cold replacement air drawn in. A heat pump exhausts nothing, so it never fights your heating system.
Drying Time: Why Heat Pump Cycles Run Longer
Lower drum temperature means water leaves the fabric more slowly, so a heat pump cycle runs longer than the equivalent vented cycle. For back-to-back loads that is a real inconvenience; run the dryer overnight and it is invisible. Do not overfill the drum either — a packed load restricts airflow and leaves the middle damp.

Repair Considerations Before You Choose
Most dryer service calls have nothing to do with how the machine makes heat. Belts snap, rollers wear, door switches stop registering, drain pumps clog, control boards fail. That is the same work on a heat pump dryer as on a vented one.
The one part we do not open: a heat pump dryer contains a small sealed refrigerant loop, much like the sealed system in a mini-fridge. If that sealed component itself fails, the repair belongs to the manufacturer under warranty or to a specialist licensed for sealed refrigerant systems — not to us.
