GE dishwashers are widely used across Canada and have a reputation for solid reliability and good parts availability. Our certified technicians service GE dishwashers regularly across the Greater Toronto Area, and the same problems come up again and again. This guide covers the most common GE dishwasher issues — what causes them, what you can check yourself, and when to book a repair.
GE Dishwasher Not Draining
Standing water in the bottom of the dishwasher after a cycle is one of the most common dishwasher problems we're called out for — and one of the most fixable. Most GE not-draining issues are maintenance-related, not component failures.
Causes in Order of Likelihood
- Clogged filter and sump: GE dishwashers have a removable filter at the bottom of the tub — food debris, grease, and glass fragments accumulate and restrict drainage
- Blocked drain hose: The hose running from the pump to the sink drain can kink or become blocked with grease
- Air gap or garbage disposal blockage: If your dishwasher drains through a garbage disposal, a clogged disposal or blocked air gap stops drainage
- Failed drain pump: When the pump motor fails, no water is expelled regardless of how clear the drain path is
DIY Check
Remove and clean the filter — on most GE models it's a twist-unlock cylinder at the tub floor. Rinse it under warm water with a brush. Check the drain hose connection at the sink or garbage disposal for blockages. If the dishwasher makes a humming sound during the drain cycle but water stays in the tub, the pump impeller is jammed — check for broken glass fragments around the pump inlet.
When to Call a Technician
Drain pump replacement on a GE dishwasher typically costs $130–$220 including parts and labour. This is a sound repair on machines under 8 years old.
GE Dishwasher Not Cleaning Dishes
A dishwasher that runs but doesn't clean is a frustrating problem that's usually caused by water delivery or temperature issues rather than a mechanical failure.
Common Causes
- Clogged spray arm holes: Mineral deposits and food particles block the small holes in the spray arms — they spin but can't spray effectively
- Clogged filter: A dirty filter reduces water pressure throughout the cycle
- Insufficient water temperature: Dishwashers need water at 49°C (120°F) to dissolve detergent and sanitize — if your water heater is set too low, cleaning suffers
- Low water inlet: Partially failed inlet valve reduces water volume entering the tub
- Failed wash pump motor: The pump that circulates water through the spray arms loses pressure as it ages
DIY Fixes
Remove the spray arms (they usually unscrew or snap off) and clear the holes with a toothpick or small brush. Clean the filter thoroughly. Run your kitchen hot water tap until it's at full temperature before starting the dishwasher — this ensures hot water (not cold water from the supply line) enters the machine at cycle start.
GE dishwasher tip: Run a dishwasher cleaning cycle once a month using a commercial dishwasher cleaner (Affresh, Finish, etc.). This removes grease and mineral buildup from the pump, spray arms, and interior — preventing most cleaning performance problems before they start.
Door Latch Not Working
A GE dishwasher that won't start — even though the door appears closed — usually has a failed door latch assembly. The latch serves two functions: physically securing the door closed and sending a signal to the control board that the door is safely latched before the cycle can begin.
Causes
- Worn or broken plastic latch hook that the strike plate catches
- Failed microswitches inside the latch assembly (the door closes but the control board doesn't get the "closed" signal)
- Misaligned door due to a broken hinge or bent tub flange
DIY Check
Open and firmly close the door, then try starting. If nothing happens, listen for any clicking sound from the latch when you close the door — no click suggests the mechanism is broken. Visually inspect the strike plate on the door and the latch on the tub for cracked or broken plastic.
Control Panel Not Working
GE dishwasher control problems range from a completely dead panel to buttons that don't respond to flashing lights with no action. GE uses two separate boards on many models — the main control board and the user interface board — so diagnosis needs to identify which one has failed.
First Step — Hard Reset
Disconnect the dishwasher from power (unplug or flip the circuit breaker) for 60 seconds, then restore power. This clears temporary control board errors and resolves the issue about 20% of the time.
When to Call a Technician
If the hard reset doesn't work, a technician needs to test both boards. Control board replacement on GE dishwashers typically runs $180–$320 depending on the model. On older machines (8+ years), weigh this against replacement cost.
Water Inlet Valve and Float Switch Problems
If your GE dishwasher runs through its cycle but the spray arms are dry or the machine makes filling sounds but dishes come out dirty, the water inlet valve or float switch needs attention.
- Failed water inlet valve: The solenoid-operated valve lets water into the machine — when it fails (electrically or mechanically), no water enters
- Stuck float switch: The float rises as water fills the tub and signals the inlet valve to close — if it sticks in the "full" position, the valve never opens; if stuck in the "empty" position, the machine overfills
DIY Check
Find the float — it's a small dome or cylinder at the front of the tub floor. Lift it manually. It should move up and down freely. If it's stuck, clean around it. Water inlet valve testing requires a multimeter and is best left to a technician.
Dishes Not Drying
GE dishwashers use a heated dry system with a heating element at the tub base and a fan in some models. When dishes come out wet consistently (beyond the normal moisture on plastics, which don't dry as well as glass), either the heating element or the high-limit thermostat has failed.
- Heating element failure: no heat during dry cycle — verify with multimeter for continuity
- High-limit thermostat failure: interrupts heat before drying completes
- Empty rinse aid dispenser: rinse aid dramatically improves drying — fill it if empty
