Bosch Washer Problems — Quick Reference
- E01: Door lock error — door interlock failure
- E18: Drain error — clogged pump filter or failed drain pump
- Door not opening: Water still in drum, or failed door interlock
- Not draining: Clogged pump filter, kinked hose, failed pump
- Vibration: Unlevel machine or worn drum bearings
- Mold in drum seal: Moisture and detergent buildup — preventable with routine cleaning
Bosch washing machines are among the most reliable front-loaders in the Canadian market — we see far fewer Bosch washers in for repair relative to their market presence. But they do have their specific failure modes, and when something goes wrong with a Bosch, the repair is typically worth doing given the machine's quality and lifespan. Our certified technicians service Bosch washers across the GTA — here's what we see most often.
Bosch Washer Error Codes — E01 Through E18
Bosch uses a numerical error code system that's well-documented and helpful for diagnosis. Here are the codes we're called about most frequently:
| Code | Meaning | Most Common Cause | First Action |
|---|---|---|---|
| E01 | Door lock error | Door interlock assembly failure or wiring | Check door closed fully; call tech if persists |
| E02 | NTC temperature sensor error | Failed water temperature sensor | Technician required |
| E09 | Heating element error | Heater element failure — washer won't heat water | Technician required |
| E13 | Water leak error | Internal leak detected by Aqua-Stop sensor | Check machine base for water; call tech |
| E17 | Water inlet timeout | Low water pressure or failed inlet valve | Check water supply valve is fully open |
| E18 | Drain error | Clogged pump filter, kinked hose, failed pump | Clean pump filter first |
| E23 | Aqua-Stop leak protection | Internal water leak — Aqua-Stop has activated | Do not restart — call technician |
| E27 | Low voltage error | Power supply fluctuation or control board issue | Check power outlet; reset machine |
E01 — Door Lock Error
The E01 error appears when the Bosch washer cannot lock the door properly at cycle start, or when the door lock signal is lost mid-cycle. The door lock (also called the door interlock) is a safety component — the machine will not run without confirming the door is securely closed and latched.
Causes
- Item of clothing caught in the door seal preventing full closure
- Worn door latch that doesn't engage the lock mechanism firmly
- Failed door interlock assembly (the electronic component that controls locking)
- Broken wiring to the interlock — common if the door has been stressed or the machine moved roughly
DIY Check
Open the door and inspect the seal for any trapped items. Close the door firmly and try starting again. If E01 persists, the interlock has failed. Bosch door interlock replacement requires accessing the front panel — it's a professional repair on most models.
E18 — Drain Error
E18 is the most common Bosch washer error code we're called to diagnose. It means the machine couldn't drain within the expected time window. Most E18 errors are maintenance issues — specifically a clogged pump filter.
How to Clean the Bosch Pump Filter
- Open the small access panel at the bottom front of the machine
- Place a shallow pan or thick towel under the cap — water will come out
- Slowly unscrew the filter cap counterclockwise (don't remove it fully until the water flow slows)
- Remove the filter cap completely and pull out the filter
- Rinse the filter under warm running water, clearing all lint, coins, and debris
- Reinstall the filter, close the cap firmly, and run a drain/spin cycle to test
When to Call a Technician
If E18 returns after cleaning the filter, the drain pump motor has failed or the pump housing has a blockage that wasn't resolved by filter cleaning. Bosch drain pump replacement typically costs $180–$280 — parts are more expensive than North American brands but Bosch pumps are high quality when replaced.
Door Not Opening After Cycle
A Bosch washer that won't open its door after completing a cycle is alarming but usually straightforward to resolve. The door lock remains engaged for 2–3 minutes after cycle completion as a safety feature — wait and try again before assuming a fault.
Common Causes
- Water still in the drum: The door won't release while water is present — check if an error code is displayed and the drum actually drained
- Power interruption during cycle: Left the lock engaged — try resetting the machine
- Failed door interlock (stuck closed): The interlock has failed in the locked position — requires replacement
Emergency Door Release
Most Bosch front-load washers have an emergency door release cord inside the pump filter access panel. Pull the cord (it may be orange or white) to mechanically disengage the door lock. Consult your manual for the exact location on your model.
Bosch Aqua-Stop feature: Most Bosch washers sold in Canada include Aqua-Stop — a dual-wall supply hose with an internal sensor that shuts off water flow if the hose fails or leaks. If you see an E23 code, the Aqua-Stop has triggered. Do not restart the machine — check for water in the base tray and call a technician. This feature prevents significant water damage.
Excessive Vibration
Bosch front-load washers are precision machines — they're more sensitive to being out of level than many competing brands. Vibration during the spin cycle that shakes the machine or causes it to "walk" is almost always a levelling or mounting issue first, before it's a component failure.
Levelling Check
- Place a spirit level on top of the machine in both directions
- Adjust the front feet by turning them — they screw in and out to raise or lower each corner
- The rear feet on most Bosch models are self-adjusting — tilt the machine forward slightly and lower it to set the rear feet
- Lock the feet with the locking nuts once level is achieved
When to Call a Technician
If the machine is level and vibration persists, the drum bearings or shock absorbers have worn. Drum bearing replacement on a Bosch washer is a major repair — the front panel and often the motor must be removed. It's expensive but worth it on a quality machine under 8 years old.
Mold and Odour in the Drum Seal
This is the most common Bosch washer complaint that doesn't involve an error code. All front-load washers are prone to mold growth in the rubber door boot seal — but Bosch's very tight door seal (important for its low water usage) can trap more moisture if not properly maintained.
Prevention (Best Approach)
- Wipe the door boot seal dry after every wash — pay attention to the folds at the bottom where water collects
- Leave the door ajar after every wash to allow the drum to air out
- Leave the detergent drawer slightly open to prevent moisture buildup
- Run a drum clean cycle monthly using a washing machine cleaner tablet
- Use only HE (high-efficiency) detergent and the correct amount — excess suds contribute to residue buildup
Cleaning Existing Mold
Mix 1 tablespoon of bleach per litre of water. Use a cloth to clean all visible mold from the boot seal, getting into all the folds. Run an empty hot wash cycle. For persistent mold deeply embedded in seal cracks, the boot seal should be replaced — mold in torn rubber cannot be fully eliminated by cleaning.
