5 Reasons an Appliance Trips the Breaker or GFCI

1 The Circuit Is Genuinely Overloaded DIY

Common in older Toronto homes and condos where one kitchen or laundry circuit serves more outlets than it was meant to. Nothing is broken; the combined draw simply exceeds the rating.

Signs: The trip happens only when two high-draw devices run at once. The appliance behaves perfectly on its own.

What to do: Move other devices to a different circuit and run the appliance alone. Avoid extension cords and power bars for major appliances.

2 A Failing Motor or Heating Element Professional

As motors and heating elements wear they draw more current than they should — worn windings, dry bearings, or an element sagging against its housing. Most common in dryers, dishwashers and washers near the end of their life.

Signs: The trip lands at a predictable point — the moment heat comes on, or when the motor starts the spin cycle.

What to do: Book a diagnosis. A technician can test the motor and element for a ground fault.

3 Moisture or a Damaged Power Cord Professional

This is the classic GFCI trip. Water at the outlet, a slow leak wetting internal wiring, or a cord pinched behind the appliance all create a leakage path to ground. That is a real shock hazard — the GFCI is catching current that could otherwise pass through a person.
